The top of the Big Ten leaderboard saw a bit of a shakeup in Week 5 of the college football season.
In the conference’s biggest game of the week, No. 5 Oregon and Dante Moore picked up a signature win on the road against No. 2 Penn State, as the Ducks won 30-24 in double overtime at Beaver Stadium in the Nittany Lions’ annual White Out Game.
With its loss, Penn State is now 4-21 all-time against top-10 opponents under coach James Franklin.
Luke Altmyer led No. 23 Illinois down the field for a game-winning drive that ended with a 41-yard field goal from David Olano to upset No. 22 USC at home in Champaign, Illinois. The Fighting Illini are now 4-1 on the season going into their Week 6 road game at Purdue.
Elsewhere, Julian Sayin and No. 1 Ohio State handled business in their cross-country flight to Seattle, as the Buckeyes defeated Washington 24-6. No. 12 Indiana and rising Heisman Trophy candidate Fernando Mendoza staved off a potential upset on the road to Iowa, throwing a 49-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Sarratt with 1:28 remaining in the game for the go-ahead score.
Both Michigan and Michigan State were on byes in Week 5, as were Wisconsin, Nebraska and Maryland. Bryce Underwood and the Wolverines will host the Badgers on Saturday, Oct. 4 for their Big Ten home opener at Michigan Stadium, for which Fox’s “Big Noon Kickoff” will be in attendance.
