Coast Guard Sector Northern Great Lakes marks change of command June 16

Coast Guard Sector Northern Great Lakes has a new commanding officer following a change of command ceremony on Tuesday, June 16 at the Lake Superior State University Arts Center in Sault Ste. Marie.

According to the Coast Guard announcement, Capt. William C. Albright relieved Capt. James R. Bendle as the commanding officer of Sector Northern Great Lakes. A retirement ceremony for Bendle took place afterward.

Bendle has served with the Coast Guard for more than 20 years. He enlisted in 1997 at Coast Guard Station Atlantic City in New Jersey, and earned his commission through Officer Candidate School in 2002. During his career, he held command positions at Coast Guard Station Grand Isle in Louisiana and Sector Maryland-National Capital Region, along with other assignments in training, enforcement and personnel management. 

Albright, the new commanding officer, is a native of Valdez, Alaska and a graduate of the California Maritime Academy. His previous assignments include commanding officer of Marine Safety Unit Huntington in West Virginia and Deputy Chief of the Polar Coordination Office at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C. 

The Sector Northern Great Lakes covers 1,850 miles of shoreline and 560 miles of U.S. and Canadian border waters, including nine Coast Guard stations.
