Check out the Cheboygan area's top sports performers for Feb. 13-15

Basketball, hockey and wrestling — a lot of wrestling.  

With wrestling individual districts taking place this past weekend, there were plenty of Cheboygan-area grapplers who booked their tickets to regionals next week.

Led by wrestling regional qualifiers, here’s a look at the top performers for Feb. 13-15.  

BOYS WRESTLING  

Evan Fradette, Cheboygan – Finished third in the 126-pound weight class at a Division 3 district meet in Grayling on Feb. 14 and qualified for regionals.

James Layman, Inland Lakes – Finished second at 120 pounds and qualified for regionals at a Division 4 district meet in Manistique on Feb. 14.  

Gunnar Hanel, Inland Lakes – Qualified for regionals by finishing second in districts at 126 pounds.  

Gus Carper, Inland Lakes – Qualified for regionals by finishing second in districts at 138 pounds. 

Wyatt Hanel, Inland Lakes – Took second in districts and qualified for regionals at 144 pounds. 

Collin Maves, Inland Lakes – Finished second in districts at 157 pounds and qualified for regionals.    

Avery Enos, Inland Lakes – Placed third in districts and qualified for regionals at 175 pounds.  

Mason Gardner, Inland Lakes – Earned third in districts and qualified for regionals at 190 pounds.  

Toby Pike, Onaway – Claimed fourth place at districts and qualified for regionals at 150 pounds.  

GIRLS WRESTLING  

Azalea Carper, Inland Lakes – Finished 3-1, earned third place, and qualified for regionals in her weight class at a Division 4 district meet in Grayling on Feb. 15.  

BOYS BASKETBALL  

Friday, Feb. 13 Result: Cheboygan 58, Boyne City 48.  

Andrew Kiefer, Cheboygan – Finished with 18 points against Boyne City on Feb. 13.  

Jack Ekdahl, Cheboygan – Recorded 14 points against Boyne City.  

Carson Kiefer, Cheboygan – Tallied 10 points against Boyne City.  

Gavin Smith, Cheboygan – Scored nine points against Boyne City.  

Landon Gahn, Cheboygan – Registered seven points against Boyne City.  

Cheboygan coach Jason Friday: “Super proud of the way the boys responded after a tough week. Andrew Kiefer, undersized against Boyne City’s big man, played fantastic. In the third quarter, we played some of our best defense of the season. Our help, recovery and rotations were phenomenal, and we held them to just four points.” 

JV Game Result: Boyne City 63, Cheboygan 52.  

Cheboygan Scorers: Elliott Schryer (15 points), Devin Fuller (12 points), Ben Schulz (11 points), Brayden Rauch (eight points), Hayden Wheelock (six points).  

Friday, Feb. 13 Result: Inland Lakes 64, Bellaire 30. 

Ryder LaBrecque, Inland Lakes – Scored 13 points against Bellaire on Feb. 13.  

Zander Robinson, Inland Lakes – Netted 11 points against Bellaire.  

Elijah Perkins, Inland Lakes – Recorded seven points against Bellaire.  

Elijah Elliott, Inland Lakes – Had six points against Bellaire.  

Andre Bradford, Inland Lakes – Tallied six points against Bellaire.  

More Inland Lakes Stats: Kiontae Mund (five points), Landen Perkins (four points), Mason Green (four points), Hayden Ridley (four points), Cash DePauw (two points), Tanner Howard (two points).  

Inland Lakes coach Bryan Newman: “Great team win. We played unselfish basketball. The boys were loose and having fun playing. Team defense was terrific and probably the most balanced I have ever seen our scorebook. I am very proud of the effort and positivity they showed.” 

Joshua Ferraiuolo, Burt Lake NMCA – Finished with 32 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals against Mancelona on Feb. 14.  

Jeremiah Tucker, Burt Lake NMCA – Tallied 22 points, 14 rebounds and five assists against Mancelona.  

Saturday, Feb. 14 Result: Mancelona 70, NMCA 56.

More NMCA Stats: Trey Fosmore (two points, 10 rebounds).  

NMCA Coach Josh Ferraiuolo: “I was pleased how we hung with a very good Mancelona team for most of the game. They were able to win the last three minutes and walked away from us. Shoutout to Jeremiah. I thought he played a very complete game across the board.” 

GIRLS BASKETBALL  

Saturday, Feb. 14 Result: Kingsley 62, Cheboygan 23.  

Cloee Rupp, Cheboygan – Finished with 12 points against Kingsley on Feb. 14.  

Elise Markham, Cheboygan – Netted seven points against Kingsley.  

Cheboygan coach Walter Hanson: “We were very shorthanded against a very tough team. We were missing four players, including three starters. Kingsley is one of the best teams in our conference and they can bring the pressure. A lot of kids stepped up and played some major minutes. We brought up four junior varsity players to help with ball handling and getting some extra minutes. All the girls bought into their new roles and really fought hard the entire game.” 

Friday, Feb. 13 Result: Inland Lakes 55, Onaway 31.  

Chloe Robinson, Inland Lakes – Scored 12 points against Onaway on Feb. 13.  

Addison Byrne, Inland Lakes – Netted 11 points – including three 3-pointers – against Onaway. 

Ava Belford, Inland Lakes – Tallied nine points against Onaway.   

Molly Monthei, Inland Lakes – Recorded seven points against Onaway.  

Andrea Vigneau, Inland Lakes – Had six points against Onaway.  

Marley Szymoniak, Onaway – Netted 11 points against Inland Lakes on Feb. 13.  

Andrea Ruppert, Onaway – Scored seven points against Inland Lakes. 

Lauren Ferraiuolo, Burt Lake NMCA – Recorded 12 points against Mancelona on Feb. 14.  

Saturday, Feb. 14 Result: Mancelona 28, NMCA 25.

NMCA Coach Josh Ferraiuolo: “Another tough opponent, another tough game. I was pretty pleased with our defense, but our offense stayed home in this one. In control at halftime led to an offensive faceplant in the second half. Credit to Mancelona; they did what they had to do to win.” 

Friday, Feb. 13 Result: NMCA 58, Alba 8.  

NMCA Scorers: Shanna Ferraiuolo (21 points), Lauren Ferraiuolo (13 points), Ariel Tucker (six points), Otillia Styburski (six points), Ellie Schepperley (six points), Isabel Hoffmeyer (four points), Caitlin Hill (two points.  

Coach Ferraiuolo: “Last regular season conference game, fun environment, got everyone a lot of playing time, and everyone in the score book. With the win, we were able to finish our conference schedule without a loss. Now on to the championship game next week.” 

HOCKEY 

Friday, Feb. 13 Result: Cadillac 6, Cheboygan 3. 

Brody McGovern, Cheboygan – Recorded a goal against Cadillac and added two assists against Negaunee on Feb. 14. 

Jackson Bancroft, Cheboygan – Stopped 42 shots against Negaunee on Feb. 14 and made 31 saves against Cadillac.

Alex Hudson, Cheboygan – Scored a goal at Cadillac.  

Braxton Esper, Cheboygan – Netted a goal against Cadillac.  

Carter Hudson, Cheboygan – Scored a goal against Negaunee and added an assist against Cadillac.

Daniel Harke, Cheboygan – Finished with a goal against Negaunee.
