Anaheim, Calif. — Rough day for Tigers starter Casey Mize.
He came out of Sunday’s 3-2 loss in the fourth inning after taking a 108.8 mph ground ball hit by Jo Adell off his left, non-throwing wrist. But it wasn’t just the wrist that led to his exit.
“Everyone could see him get in the wrist,” manager AJ Hinch said. “But he was also dealing with some groin tightness. He had multiple things going on. I needed to get him out of the game.”
Mize has had two stints on the injured list because of groin issues this season. He described his exit Sunday as precautionary.
“The wrist, he smoked it and it hit under my glove, like on the side of the hand or wrist,” Mize said. “But that’s doing good. That’s nothing I’m going to be concerned about. We will see how I feel tomorrow, but right now, I feel good about that.”
A little less so about the groin, but only because that’s been a repeating issue.
“We tried to do the smart thing to make sure there’s no big issue,” Hinch said. “Seems like the wrist is OK. We will get the groin checked out.”
Drew Anderson was summoned into a 1-1 game when Mize departed.
The entire day had been a struggle for Mize. He’d thrown 74 pitches and was just one out into the fourth inning.
He had five strikeouts but the Angels had scored a run on five hits with a walk.
“It’s tough,” Mize said. “As a starting pitcher, you want to get more than 10 outs for your team. That’s always frustrating.”
