Bruce Campbell is bringing his new movie “Ernie & Emma” to the Redford Theatre, where the cult actor and Metro Detroit native got his start.
Campbell and director Sam Raimi launched “The Evil Dead” at the Redford in 1981, kickstarting their careers. Campbell is returning June 5 with his latest movie, which he wrote, directed, produced and stars in.
“Ernie & Emma” tells the story of Ernie (Campbell), a pear salesman in a small town in Oregon, who goes on a journey following the death of his wife, Emma. “It’s an age-appropriate story for a guy like me,” Campbell told The News of the movie, which he shot in southern Oregon, where he has lived for years.
He produced the movie with his wife of 35 years, Ida Gearon, and he did it without “meddling from studios,” he says.
That filmmaking freedom brought Campbell back to his roots growing up in Metro Detroit; as such, he dedicated it to his pals with whom he grew up making movies, including Sam Raimi and Scott Spiegel.
“It’s a callback to the carefree days of Super 8, where we could do whatever the f–k we wanted to do,” Campbell said of “Ernie & Emma.” “So I thought, ‘All the boys are responsible for this,’ so they’re all in there.”
“Ernie & Emma” is the first movie Campbell has directed since 2007’s “My Name is Bruce.” It co-stars Cerina Vincent, Ted Raimi, Emma Raimi and Robin McAlpine as the voice of Emma.
Campbell will be on hand at the Redford to introduce the film and meet with fans. Tickets are $25 and are on sale now through the Redford Theatre’s website.
“Ernie & Emma” is rated R and will be released through Alamo Drafthouse theaters in September, Campbell says.
