Brighton Area Schools will continue to offer free meals to students through Halloween, according to a report from WHMI.
The BAS Board of Education decided Sept. 8 that students will continue to have free breakfast and lunch through October, according to WHMI. The board met at Scranton Middle School.
Michigan lawmakers haven’t yet passed a School Aid Budget for Fiscal Year 2025-26, which begins Oct. 1. The state has provided funding for free breakfast and lunch to public school students since 2023 — but with no approved budget, the program’s future is uncertain.
According to BAS Superintendent Matthew Outlaw, the district is providing roughly 76,000 lunches and 24,000 breakfasts, reported WHMI.
The district will continue discussions on the free meal program should lawmakers decline to extend the budget, according to WHMI. The board next meets Oct. 13.
Outlaw previously told The Daily he’s optimistic that funding for school meals will be approved.
