SUNRISE, FL – Andrew Copp limped out of Amerant Bank Arena, the latest Detroit Red Wings center felled by a leg injury.
There wasn’t much of an update in the immediate aftermath of the incident, which came about midway through the Wings’ 4-3 loss at the Florida Panthers on Tuesday, March 10, when Copp was injured during a face-off. Copp got tangled up with Florida’s Tomas Nosek, who fell on Copp’s left leg. Copp winced and needed to be helped off the ice.
“He’s being evaluated now and he’ll need more evaluation tomorrow,” coach Todd McLellan said. “He’s doubtful for Tampa.”
The Wings (35-22-7) face the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday, then finish their trip Saturday at the Dallas Stars.
The Wings already are without top center Dylan Larkin, who hurt his right leg during the last Friday’s home game against the Panthers when his leg buckled awkwardly as he pulled up to take a shot. Larkin is on the trip, a move made so he can receive care for the injury in the hopes he can soon return to the ice.
“He needs the treatment before he can skate,” McLellan said. “Made progress today. I would say that he’s doubtful for this trip now where we’re at – we’re two games in. And Andrew is doubtful for Tampa. We’ve got to get a lot more testing done on him.”
Marco Kasper said that, “it’s never easy to see a guy get injured. And they’rea big part of our team. I hope both are going to come back as soon as possible.”
Wednesday is a scheduled day off for the Wings, but they are expected to call up a forward to replenish the lineup. Their top center prospect in the minors, Nate Danielson, is, unfortunately for them, banged up, though he’s supposed to be back soon.
