Amon-Ra St. Brown's record-setting WR contract not even in top 5 barely one year later

Amon-Ra St. Brown signed a contract extension with the Lions just ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft weekend in Detroit. The deal made the Lions star the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL at the time. The fourth-round pick in 2021 signed a four-year, $120,010,000 deal in April of 2024.

St. Brown’s stint at the top of the WR salary pantheon was short-lived. A little over one year later, he’s not even in the top five at his position in average salary per season.

The New York Jets reached an extension agreement with wideout Garrett Wilson this week that tops St. Brown’s deal. Wilson agreed to a 4-year, $130 million contract extension with the New York Jets. That monster extension for Wilson pushes St. Brown down to seventh on the annual compensation ladder amongst NFL wide receivers.

Two things are evident from the rapid escalation of wide receiver contracts. First, the Lions were smart to lock up St. Brown when they did for a then-record average salary per season. Secondly, it’s not going to be easy to get the same kind of relative value with St. Brown on his next contract, which will come due when he’s just 29 years old, presuming he remains an All-Pro wideout.
