A Walk in the Park is an ongoing series from State Journal photographer Nick King, who intends to explore Lansing area parks one hour at a time. If you have a suggestion of a park he should visit, email him at nking@lsj.com.
Bunker Road Landing serves as a peaceful riverside spot for paddlers, anglers and anyone seeking a quiet connection to the Grand River, just outside Eaton Rapids.
Located at 11000 Bunker Highway in Eaton Rapids, this canoe landing provides easy access to the Grand River for canoes, kayaks and small boats. It sits two hours upstream from Burchfield Park and about 1.5 hours downstream from Eaton Rapids, making it a convenient stop for those floating the river.
The park features a picnic area shaded by mature trees with a nice canopy, along with grills perfect for those stopping at the park to enjoy a meal after time on the water. There are some open areas and a few shorter trails for visitors looking to stretch their legs and soak in the natural surroundings.
Fishing in the Grand River is popular here as well. The park opens a half-hour before sunrise for pedestrian access and at 8 a.m. for vehicle access. It closes at sunset, unless otherwise posted.
Visitors should bring bug spray and consider wearing long sleeves and pants as mosquitoes have been particularly bad lately due to recent rains.
Swimming or wading is not recommended because of the swift current, uneven river bottom, hidden obstructions and fluctuating water levels.
Parking and a portable bathroom are available on site. Leashed dogs are welcome.
