Some homes make headlines because of their price. Others stand out because of the stories behind them.
Over the past year, several distinctive Detroit properties captured attention for their ties to the city’s history, music, film and television industries. From a home once owned by musician Sixto Rodriguez to a residence featured on HGTV’s “Bargain Block,” each offered something far beyond the typical listing.
Since then, four of the homes have sold. Their sales prices ranged from $120,000 to $535,000, all above Detroit’s 2025 median sales price of $94,050, according to Realcomp II Ltd. data.
Here’s a bit about each one and how much it sold for:
1 of Corktown’s oldest homes: $535K
A distinctive, red-painted home at 1200 Porter St. in Detroit’s historic Corktown neighborhood sold Dec. 1, 2025, for $535,000 after originally being listed for $599,000 June 16, 2025.
Believed to date to the 1840s, the property is considered one of the neighborhood’s oldest residences. The home drew attention for its preserved historic character, including narrow staircases and hallways that reflected its early origins, as well as a Spanish-inspired kitchen and an Airbnb unit.
While public records list the home as being built in 1900, it is believed to have originally been constructed decades earlier, offering a rare glimpse into Detroit’s early residential history. The two-unit property also featured hand-painted Talavera tile from Mexico, Pewabic tile accents and a private garden anchored by a towering ginkgo tree.
Its unique character attracted attention long before it was listed for sale. The home was featured in Metropolitan Home magazine and was highlighted in a Detroit Free Press article more than 30 years ago.
Home with a Hollywood connection: $280K
At 14535 Ashton Road in Detroit’s Grandmont/Rosedale Park neighborhood, a Tudor-style residence featured in Steven Soderbergh’s 2021 crime drama “No Sudden Move” sold Jan. 16, 2026, for $280,000 after originally being listed for $299,000 on Oct. 14, 2025.
The home drew attention after being transformed into a 1950s movie set during filming of the star-studded production, which featured actors including Don Cheadle, Benicio del Toro and Jon Hamm.
Homeowner Jeff Daigle said the property was selected after location scouts were drawn to the home’s sight lines through the main-floor hallway and second-floor landing. What was expected to be a three-month rental for filming stretched to nearly 11 months because of COVID-19 delays.
During production, crews converted the home into a midcentury time capsule, adding vintage cabinetry, period appliances, wallpaper and furnishings.
After filming wrapped, the owners modernized portions of the home while preserving much of its historic character, including leaded glass windows, hardwood floors and a wood-burning fireplace.
Sixto Rodriguez’s longtime Detroit home: $320K
The three-story brick home at 4820 Avery in Detroit’s Woodbridge neighborhood sold March 2, 2026, for $320,000 after originally being listed for $399,000 on Oct. 6, 2025.
The property was owned for nearly 50 years by the late singer-songwriter Sixto Rodriguez, whose remarkable rise to international fame was chronicled in the Oscar-winning documentary “Searching for Sugar Man.” The home also served as the backdrop for interviews featured in the film.
Rodriguez purchased the home in the late 1970s and spent decades making improvements to the property. According to his daughter, Regan Rodriguez, the house was in poor condition when he bought it, with few windows and limited plumbing, but he gradually transformed it into his longtime home base.
Located in Detroit’s Woodbridge neighborhood, the three-story brick residence featured original hardwood floors, large front porches and a walk-up attic.
The sale also included Rodriguez’s beloved grand piano, where he spent time playing music with his grandchildren.
HGTV ‘Bargain Block’ home: $120K
One of two neighboring homes renovated and featured on HGTV’s “Bargain Block,” 16230 Santa Rosa Drive sold Aug. 7, 2025, for $120,000 after originally being listed at $154,900 on May 17, 2025.
The fully furnished bungalow was operating as an Airbnb and retained much of the distinctive design style that made it recognizable to fans of the HGTV series.
Renovated in 2023, the two-bedroom brick home featured neutral decor, bamboo and hardwood flooring, updated appliances and a bathroom accented with classic penny tile. It reflected the creative design style that helped make “Bargain Block” popular among viewers and fans of Detroit revitalization.
While their listings have come to an end, the homes remain notable examples of the unique properties that continue to surface throughout Detroit’s housing market.
