Bloomfield Township police are on the lookout after they say eight people allegedly coordinated a theft at a Dick’s Sporting Goods on Sunday, July 19.
Police reports and security footage show the suspects appear to wait until employees looked away to come into the store, quickly clearing a turnstile of Nike apparel. Police say the suspects jacked nearly $11,000 worth of merchandise and made off in a matter of seconds.
The department said police were called to the sporting goods store on 2105 S. Telegraph Road for a retail theft in progress, around 6:30 p.m. Sunday, July 19. According to reports, eight people, believed to be aged 17-25, ran into the store, stole assorted merchandise, and fled.
The reports said the group fled in two vehicles, an older-model white Chevrolet Suburban and a white Chevrolet Blazer.
Bloomfield Township Police said the case was turned over to their investigative unit, where reports from detectives certified the store lost a total of $10,800 in Nike sweats. The department’s press release said the store recovered two items of clothing from the parking lot, totaling $220.
According to security footage obtained by the Free Press, two suspects are shown walking into the Nike clothing section, where they appear to browse the shelves until nearby employees turn away, when they are joined by six others and begin clearing the shelves.
The footage appears to show the suspects clear an entire turnstile of Nike jackets and sweatpants, fleeing quickly. Reports from police said they fled in two vehicles: an older-model white Chevrolet Suburban and a white Chevrolet Blazer
The department says they are urging the public to provide any information regarding the theft.
