5-year-old shot on Detroit's west side Tuesday night

A 5-year-old was shot in the arm while riding his bike on Detroit’s west side Tuesday night, police said.

The child was expected to recover, WXYZ-TV (Channel 7) reported. The bullet appeared to have gone through the boy’s arm, police Chief Todd Bettison said, reported WDIV-TV (Channel).

He was on his bike outside of his home at about 9 p.m. under the watch of his father, according to a press conference held by Bettison. A person of interest, about 15 or 16 years of age, was being sought, according to WXYZ.

“A 5-year-old was out in front of his house, riding his bicycle. His father was supervising,” Bettison said. “(The) father heard approximately three gunshots and the child fell from his bicycle.

“Just to parents and everyone, know where your kids are. Juevniles should not have guns, and whether you are an adult or a child you should not be firing a weapon inside of the city limits, because what goes up comes down.”
