From live music to fall fests to foraging, there’s plenty to do in Northern Michigan this weekend.

Enjoy Fall Fest with LTBHS

The Little Traverse Bay Humane Society in Harbor Springs is hosting a Fall Fest celebration from 3-6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24. 

The event includes trick-or-treating across the shelter’s campus, a fall photo backdrop, free puppuccinos, dog treat decorating, a costume contest, food trucks and more seasonal fun. Fall Fest is free, family-friendly and pets are welcome!

Get info at Community Health Fair 

MyMichigan Health will host a Community Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25 at Sault Rehabilitation, 2472 Ashmun St. 

The free event is designed to bring health and wellness resources directly to the Sault community. This year’s fair will include flu and pneumonia vaccines in partnership with the Chippewa County Health Department, free health screenings for blood pressure and other concerns, tobacco cessation resources and Narcan education, mental health awareness information, nutrition and exercise information, insurance education, career opportunities and advanced care planning, and even a Teddy Bear Clinic for children.

Find out about community, civic engagement 

Opportunities for community and civic engagement will be on display at the Crooked Tree Arts Center in Petoskey on Saturday, Oct. 25. 

At 1 p.m., there will be a film screening of “Join or Die.” An Emmy-nominated feature documentary, it is described as asking three urgent civic questions: “What makes democracy work? Why is American democracy in crisis? And, most importantly, What can we do about it?”

After the screening, there will be a Join Fair from 2:45-4:30 p.m. featuring representatives from local organizations such as the Zonta Club of Petoskey Area, the Rotary Club of Petoskey, the Kiwanis Club of Petoskey, the Little Traverse Civic Theater, the League of Women Voters and the Crooked Tree Arts Center. 

This event is offered in partnership with the Rotary Club of Petoskey.

Learn about foraging and traditional food 

Find out all about foraging and traditional Native foods at a presentation at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Carnegie Building in Petoskey. 

The event will include a discussion on the Burt Lake Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians’ newest book “Naajimiijimedaa: Let’s Find Food” with author Kathy Kae. The book highlights foraging in Northern Michigan, and includes 40 different traditional foods along with how to harvest, process and cook with them. 

Guests will also be able to enjoy corn soup and fry bread prepared by tribal elder Barb Richmond.

Experience “The Music of Paul McCartney”

“Live and Let Die: The Music of Paul McCartney” featuring Tony Kishman will take the stage at the Cheboygan Opera House at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26. 

Kishman, a veteran of the Broadway musical “Beatlemania,” will perform hit songs from the Beatles catalog and Paul McCartney’s solo works. 

Tickets are $25-40 for adults, with veterans receiving a $5 discount. Student tickets are $10.

Bonus!: Have fun at early Halloween events 

You don’t have to wait until Oct. 31 to have some Halloween fun. There are plenty of local events happening this weekend. 

For example, Petoskey will be hosting its downtown parade and trick-or-treating starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25. The Halloween Spooktacular will return to downtown Sault Ste. Marie on Friday, Oct. 24, with trick-or-treating at 5 p.m. and the Parade of Frights at 6 p.m. There’s also Boyne City Elementary School’s Trunk ’n Read from 3-4:30 p.m. on Saturday Oct. 25 featuring the Scholastic Book Fair and a visit from the Boyne District Library bookmobile.
