Three Wayne State University students died and another was seriously injured in a car crash early Monday morning, university officials said.
A notice from the university’s president and chair of the Board of Governors said the campus is mourning the loss of the three students. A fourth student was seriously injured.
The campus was “grieving with families, friends, faculty and classmates of those who were lost and we send our strength to the injured student and their loved ones,” said a letter posted on the university website by President Richard Bierschbach and Bryan Barnhill II, the board chair.
Detroit police said the crash occurred at 1:30 a.m. Monday when a vehicle struck a parked truck in the area of Temple Street and Cass Avenue, police said.
Police did not release information about the crash or identify the students. The car crashed into a parked semitractor-trailer, WDIV (channel 4) reported.
The WSU letter from the Office of the President said the Dean of Students Office was contacting the students’ families. “… Out of respect for the families, we are not sharing additional details at this time. We are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals caring for those affected.”
The letter added that counseling and psychological services on campus were available. For anyone in crisis, call Warrior Mental Health Urgent Services at (313) 577-2277 anytime.
Michigan State Police said last Tuesday that 11 people died on Michigan roadways over the previous week, raising the total number of traffic deaths to 127 so far this year.
In addition, another 61 people were seriously injured, bringing the statewide total of injuries from crashes to 615, the agency reported.
There are eight fewer fatalities and eight fewer serious injuries compared to the same period last year, state police data said.
