2 dead after small plane crashes into storage facility in Kent County

Two people are dead after a small aircraft crashed into a storage facility in Kent County on Monday, July 21.

The crash happened at about 4:30 p.m., near the intersection of Vergennes Street and Lincoln Lake Avenue SE in Vergennes Township, just outside the Lowell Airport, according to a news release from the Kent County Sheriff’s Office.

The small plane had departed from Alpena and was flying through the Grand Rapids area when it went down, according to the release. The occupants, 62-year-old Kevin Lawrence of Presque Isle and 68-year-old Paul Shalk of Rogers City, died in the crash.

The Kent County Sheriff’s Office is working with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board to determine the cause of the crash.

“We extend our condolences to the families and friends of Kevin and Paul during this difficult time,” the sheriff’s office said.
