2 dead after officer involved shootings in Ecorse, Waterford

Two men died after separate officer-involved shootings in metro Detroit on Thursday, May 14.

At approximately 8:15 p.m., an officer shot and killed a man charging at him with a knife in Ecorse, according to the Michigan State Police Second District. At approximately 9:50 p.m., a 60-year-old man from Madison Heights was killed in a shooting in Waterford.

In Wayne County, an Ecorse police officer responded to a domestic assault involving a suspect with a knife, according to a post on X by MSP Second District. The male suspect charged at the officer with the knife, and the officer fired his duty weapon and killed the suspect. There were no injuries to the officer or the public. MSP is investigating the incident.

The victim of the alleged domestic violence was hospitalized as of Thursday night, Public Information Officer Lt. Mike Shaw told the Free Press on Friday afternoon.

In Waterford, Waterford Police assisted Michigan State Police in the pursuit of a silver Kia wanted for fleeing police stopped along the roadway near Deer Path Trail and Rookery Boulevard, according to a preliminary investigation by the Michigan State Police Second District. MSP troopers attempted to make contact with the driver, who drove away, eventually driving off the road and coming to a stop in a grassy area in the 700 block of Apopka Street.

According to a news release from the Waterford Police Department on Friday, May 15, the man turned into a neighborhood near Turrillium Lane and Williams Lake Road, where he crashed into a tree. The vehicle came to rest in a low marshy area, according to the news release.

MSP Troopers and Waterford Police officers approached the suspect vehicle from the rear and ordered him to show his hands, according to the Waterford Police Department. The suspect raised a handgun while still seated in the vehicle and pointed it at responding officers, according to the Waterford Police Department. Officers fired upon the suspect, according to the news release.

“They attempted to get him to throw the weapon out the car window, but the suspect did not comply,” according to MSP Second District preliminary investigation posted on X. “After several attempts to get the suspect to throw out his weapon, several shots were fired.”

Officers secured the handgun and immediately rendered aid, according to the Waterford Police Department. The Waterford Regional Fire Department responded, and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two troopers and an MSP sergeant involved in the shooting are on administrative leave, according to MSP. The involved Waterford Township officers have been placed on administrative leave.

The MSP Third District Investigative Response Team is investigating the shooting. Oakland County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the Waterford Township Police Department’s involvement in the shooting.

MSP and Oakland County Sheriff’s Office referred questions about how many Waterford officers were involved to the Waterford Township Police Department, which did not immediately respond to Free Press request for comment.
