Current clerk Lisa Borgacz’ last day is Aug. 14

In what appears to be a surprise to Algonac officials and residents alike, City Clerk Lisa Borgacz resigned from her position with the city in late July and will depart the office this Friday, Aug. 14. She has been the clerk for the city since 2021.
Borgacz worked alongside longtime City Manager Denice Gerstenberg until Gerstenberg retired last November. Her new immediate supervisor became former Clay Township Supervisor Artie Bryson, who was hired as the city manager in Algonac in December of last year.
The City of Algonac Government and Community Service Facebook page posted the opening for a city clerk on Aug. 5 with a flyer denoting all the details for applicants for the job.

The City of Algonac is accepting applications for the position of City Clerk. Qualified candidates are invited to submit a resume and letter of interest to the city manager.
Salary and benefits will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
This position will remain open until filled.

Mayor weighs-in on clerk’s resignation
Blue Water Healthy Living sent an email to Mayor Rocky Gillis and City Manager Artie Bryson on Aug. 6 to ask about the unexpected opening in the city offices. Gillis responded on Aug. 10 but there was no response from Bryson.
Blue Water Healthy Living: Wondering what’s happening in the city offices in terms of why is there an opening for a city clerk? Is Lisa (Borgacz) retiring? Moving? Taking another job?
Mayor Rocky Gillis: Lisa has chosen to pursue a different path, I am unsure of what her future plans are, but I certainly wish her the very best. She is an amazing and highly qualified clerk.
BWHL: When is Lisa’s last day?
Gillis: Lisa’s last day with the city will be August 14.
BWHL: How soon will clerk candidates be interviewed and who will oversee that process?
Gillis: As far as filling the position, our City Charter provides that the city manager selects the city clerk (but) with the consent of city council.
BWHL: Will city council have a vote on who lands the job?
Gillis: Yes, council will ultimately vote on whether to consent to the city manager’s selection.
BWHL: It appears Lisa has been the city clerk for more than 5 years now, is the administration sorry to see her go?
Gillis: On a personal level, I am very sad to see Lisa leave. She is a very good and qualified clerk. In a small city like Algonac, losing an employee can feel like losing part of the family. I appreciate Lisa’s service to our community and sincerely wish her well in whatever path she chooses next.
