The IHSA football season soared out of the gates during a thunderstorm-filled Friday night, Aug. 22, with plenty of stars shining across the Rockford area despite the weather.
Two games were postponed until Saturday, Aug. 23, and most of the others were delayed once, twice, some even three times on Friday night. But they plowed through.
Here are the rescheduled games for Saturday, as well as a roundup of some of the top stars that came out of Week 1 from the Rockford area:
Postponements
Normal U-High at Rochelle is rescheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday
Guilford at Boylan is rescheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday
WEEK 1 TOP PERFORMERS
Braxton Fausett, Harlem QB
Fausett threw for 80 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for 67 yards and a spin-filled TD rushing TD, to spark Harlem’s dominant 55-14 win over Belvidere North in the opener.
Tykeese Duncan, Harlem RB
Duncan showed his burst on a 52-yard TD early in the second half, and he rushed for 98 yards on just six carries in Harlem’s blowout win over the Blue Thunder.
Connor Politsch, Forreston QB
Politsch rushed 13 times for 109 yards and two scores, and he completed two of his four passes for 35 yards and a TD during the Cardinals 42-12 win over Dwight.
Ian Geiseman, Lena-Winslow RB
Geiseman rushed for 148 yards and two TDs on 28 carries, but it wasn’t enough in Lena-Winslow’s 34-28 loss to Lisle Benet Academy.
Miles Mahon, Lena-Winslow RB
Mahon also rushed for over 100 yards, gaining 133 yards on 30 carries in Le-Win’s opener. Benet Academy had two late passing TDs to rally for the win.
JJ Edmonson, Byron RB
Edmonson rushed for 82 yards on just five carries, scoring twice, one catch for 17 yards, four tackles, including one for a loss, and two punt returns for 61 yards during Byron’s 55-7 win over North Boone.
Dominic Cacciatore, Hononegah QB
The new Hononegah quarterback threw for 138 yards and a pair of TDs, completing 13 of his 19 passes on the wet night, during Hononegah’s 28-13 win over Belvidere. Cacciatore transferred over from Boylan in the offseason.
Nick Alvarez, Belvidere RB
Alvarez rushed for 118 yards and had five catches for 129 yards and a touchdown as the Bucs battled Hononegah.
Jackson Sternquist, Belvidere QB
Sternquist completed seven of his 10 passes for 133 yards and that TD to Alvarez out of the backfield on Friday. Although they kept it close, the Bucs couldn’t quite pull one out against Hononegah.
