The Milwaukee Brewers close out their homestand in position to secure a series victory over the Minnesota Twins at American Family Field on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 9.
Right-hander Jacob Misiorowski (11-5, 1.63) makes his first start in a week for the Brewers and will be opposed by Twins left-hander (and Tomah product) Connor Prielipp (3-5, 4.75).
Milwaukee’s lineup has undergone some shuffling today with Joey Ortiz (neck) considered day to day with a sore neck and Cooper Pratt being placed on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain.
Infielder-outfielder Jihwan Bae was signed to a free-agent deal and added to the active roster.
As a result of all the moves and injuries, Andrew Vaughn makes his first start at third base and David Hamilton his first start at shortstop.
Miz surrenders another homer, and then nearly a third
With two outs in the sixth, Misiorowski walked Josh Bell – a misdeed that was magnified one batter later when Kody Clemens belted a 99.1-mph fastball left over the plate into the Twins’ bullpen in right-center to tie the score at 3-3.
One batter later, Brooks Lee lifted a high fly ball to the cutout area in right field that wouldn’t have gone out but likely would have fallen for at least a double if not for a leaping Luis Lara grab at the wall for the third out.
Twins tie it up in the fifth – briefly
The Twins had just one hit through four innings, a Lee single that ricocheted off the left calf of Misiorowski in the second, before Lee led off the fifth by booming a homer out to right-center.
It came on a 99.4-mph fastball Misiorowski left out over the heart of the plate and was the third allowed in Misiorowski’s last three starts.
Milwaukee answered in the form of a Jake Bauers solo homer to left to start the bottom of the fifth, then Gary Sánchez and David Hamilton sandwiched doubles around a groundout to up the advantage to 3-1.
Another milestone for The Miz
By fanning Middleton native Alan Roden to start the third inning, Misiorowski became the first pitcher in the majors this season to reach the 200-strikeout mark.
It’s the first time Misiorowski has struck out 200 in a season and the 17th time in franchise history a pitcher has done so in a single season.
Misiorowski becomes the ninth Brewers pitcher to strike out 200, joining Yovani Gallardo (four times), Corbin Burnes (three times), Freddy Peralta (three times), Teddy Higuera (two times), Zack Greinke, Doug Davis, Ben Sheets and Brandon Woodruff.
He also reached 200 faster than any other Milwaukee pitcher, in just 22 starts. Burnes had previously held the team record by doing it in 25 starts in 2021, the season he won the National League’s Cy Young Award.
Another leadoff homer for Jackson Chourio
Jackson Chourio has been on a tear of late and he continued it with a leadoff homer to right-center off Prielipp.
It was his third leadoff homer this season, fourth homer overall in his last six games and third in his last four.
Misiorowski, meanwhile, retired the side on 10 pitches in the first inning – all 102.8 mph or higher – and threw fastballs for his first 21 pitches overall.
