What separates communities that thrive from those that simply react to the challenges placed before them?
It is rarely geography. It is not luck. And it certainly is not the size of a city’s budget.
Through our CivicCon lecture series, we have found that the difference is engaged citizens. People just like you who care enough about our community to do something about it.
Across America, communities are grappling with familiar questions. How do we grow without losing our identity? How do we revitalize downtowns, preserve historic assets, create housing opportunities, strengthen local economies, and build trust among citizens? These challenges are not unique to Pensacola. They are common to communities of every size.
The good news is that there are solutions. More importantly, those solutions are coming from local leaders who are demonstrating that meaningful progress is possible when citizens, businesses, nonprofits and public officials work together.
That spirit of collaboration is exactly why the Center for Civic Engagement together with Strong Towns is proud to announce that it is again hosting a Civic Leader Summit this October in Pensacola.
Last year’s summit was so successful that we decided to host it again with our amazing local sponsors. The summit was created around a simple belief: communities learn best from other communities.
When local leaders share their successes, failures and lessons learned, everyone benefits. Ideas that have worked in Greenville, South Carolina can inspire solutions in Pensacola. Lessons from small towns across the Midwest can help larger cities address growth challenges. Conversations that begin in a breakout session can lead to lasting partnerships and real results here in Pensacola.
This year’s summit will bring together nationally recognized leaders and practitioners who are actively shaping stronger communities. Participants will hear from civic innovators, elected officials, economic development experts and community builders who are confronting the same issues many of us face every day.
These conversations matter because the future of our communities will not be determined by national headlines. Pensacola’s future will be determined by local action.
Strong communities are built when neighbors engage in productive conversations. They are strengthened when leaders seek solutions instead of division. They flourish when residents take ownership of the places they call home.
Pensacola has become a living example of what can happen when people invest in civic conversations. Over the past eight years (yes, CivicCon’s first speaker was way back in September 2018!), we have witnessed remarkable momentum across our community. New development, revitalized public spaces, growing entrepreneurship and increased civic participation have all contributed to a stronger sense of community pride.
Yet our work is far from complete.
The challenges facing communities today require thoughtful leadership, informed citizens, and a willingness to learn from others. That is why gatherings like the Civic Leader Summit are so important. They create space for fresh ideas, honest dialogue, and practical solutions.
At the Center for Civic Engagement, our mission is to strengthen communities by fostering civic participation and productive conversations. We believe healthy communities depend on informed and engaged citizens who are willing to work across differences to create a better future.
The Civic Leader Summit is an extension of that mission.
