Eighteen months after breaking ground, the West Texas VA Health Care System has announced the beginning of construction for its new Abilene care facility.
The Abilene Community Based Outpatient Clinic was dedicated Jan. 27, 2027, in a ceremony at 5602 Health Center Drive.
Local and Veteran’s Administration officials, the public and veterans toured the building, a former boutique health care provider, and were told the expanded care facility would open earlier this year.
In a Tuesday media release, West Texas VA officials said that after several months of unexpected delays, the project is finally on track to move forward.
“Construction is expected to take approximately 12 months, followed by an additional three to four months to outfit the facility,” they wrote. “When it opens, the new clinic will significantly expand access to care for Veterans across the Big Country.”
The new clinic will feature a full imaging center, an urgent care clinic, an eye clinic and expanded primary and specialty care services. VA now contracts those amenities out to local civilian health providers.
The existing Abilene VA clinic, which is located next door to a Goodwill store at 3850 Ridgemont Drive, will continue to remain open for several years after the new facility opens.
