Report: Nets, Michael Porter Jr. to talk contract extension soon

The Brooklyn Nets will be playing their fourth game of the Las Vegas Summer League on Thursday as they are looking to advance to the playoff stage of the event. Prior to Brooklyn playing in the summer circuit, they knew that one of the most important pieces of business was contract extension talks with forward Michael Porter Jr. and soon, there may be clarity on that situation.

“Michael Porter Jr’s agent, Mark Bartelstein, is scheduled to meet with the Brooklyn Nets and general manager Sean Marks towards the tail end of summer league or at the end of summer league to begin dialogue on an extension,” NBA insider Chris Haynes said of Porter during his appearance on NBA TV. Porter is heading into the last season of his contract, meaning that the Nets have the chance to extend him to keep him with the team for the foreseeable future.

“Now if it becomes apparent early on that an extension is not in play, then I do believe the next step will be the Brooklyn Nets and Michael Porter Jr. potentially parting ways and potentially looking to move him,” Haynes continued on the upcoming talks. The Las Vegas Summer League ends on July 19 so it seems like Porter and the Nets will be meeting sometime soon and clarity on the talks could be disseminated by next week.

Brooklyn general manager Sean Marks was asked earlier this week by the media about the extension talks with Porter and he didn’t seem concerned about those negotiations despite the potential implications. “We’ll have those discussions. We’ve got time. There’s no immediate hurry right now with Mike. We value him a lot. He had a terrific year last year, arguably his best year as a pro…So I look forward to having those discussions,” Marks said, per Brian Lewis of the New York Post.

Technically speaking, the Nets could sign Porter to a contract extension by June 30, 2027, but in practical terms, it’s usually better to decide on signing a player to an extension before the contract tear starts just to have the most options possible. At this point, it seems that if the Nets don’t sign Porter to an extension before the season starts, he is likely headed elsewhere via a trade.
