It’s not coming home. England missed its chance at its first World Cup final since winning it all in 1966, instead settling for an appearance in the third-place game in South Florida against rival France.
After a first half that saw 19 fouls and few goal-scoring chances for either team, defending champion Argentina came through with a 2-1 win in Atlanta. Anthony Gordon opened the scoring for the Three Lions in the 55th minute, but Enzo Fernandez curled in a glorious goal from distance in the final five minutes to equalize. Then in stoppage time, Lionel Messi found the head of Lautaro Martinez for what would prove to be the winner.
While Argentina heads north to play Spain for the world championship, Harry Kane and England will come to Miami to take on France in the bronze-medal game. Golden Boot front-runner Kylian Mbappe and the explosive French team were brought down to earth with a 2-0 loss to La Roja in the first semifinal. The Spaniards held Les Bleus without a goal for the first time in 20 matches dating to March 2025.

England and France have played three times previously in the World Cup, with Les Bleus holding a 2-0-1 record. They last met in 2022 with France winning 2-1 to advance to their second straight final. Harry Kane scored on a penalty kick but missed a second that would have likely sent the game into extra time.
England had just played their quarterfinal match in Miami, beating Erling Haaland and Norway 2-1 in extra time July 11 off two goals by Jude Bellingham.
