IndyStar is tracking each killing to better understand violence in the city. This list is preliminary, and the number of homicides can change as authorities investigate each case, determining whether the slaying was criminal, justified, accidental or suicide. IndyStar has excluded cases ruled accidents, suicides, fatal overdoses or hit-and-run deaths unless they were deemed intentional. This information is compiled using data from Indianapolis police, court records and interviews with family and friends of those killed. Michael Alvin Edwards, 57, dies in shooting near Leland Avenue
Aug. 29: Police responded to a report of a person shot at about 8:18 p.m. in the 3400 block of North Leland Avenue near the intersection of East 34th Street and Emerson Avenue.
When police arrived they found Michael Alvin Edwards, 57, suffering from gunshot wounds inside a vehicle sitting in front of the house.
Edwards was transported to a local hospital where he died.
On Sept. 20, 2024, police announced the arrest of 32-year-old Thomas Mason Jr. in the killing. A jury was unable to reach a verdict in a February 2026 trial, and on June 9, 2026, Mason pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon and one count of reckless homicide. He was sentenced to six years in prison with credit for time served followed by three years of home detention and another three years of probation.
Jaishawn Darell Johnson, 22, and Armonie Booker, 3, die in shooting near Shadeland Avenue,
Aug 26: Police responded to a report of a person shot at about 9:30 p.m. in the 7400 block of North Shadeland Avenue near the Shadeland Shopping Center.
When police arrived they found two people, Jaishawn Darell Johnson, 22, and Armonie Booker, 3, suffering from gunshot wounds and in critical condition.
Police provided medical aid to the man until emergency medical personnel arrived, but he later died at the scene.
The child was sent to a local hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries.
On Nov. 18, Indianapolis police announced the arrest of 22-year-old William Paschall-Young in connection with the killings.

John Hamby III, 39, found dead near Garfield Park
Aug. 25: Police responded to a report of a person down shortly before 3 a.m. on the 2300 block of Pagoda Drive, near Garfield Park.
When police arrived they found John Hamby III, 39, suffering from injuries consistent with trauma. Emergency medical personnel pronounced Hamby dead at the scene.
Police are investigating the matter, but have not detained or taken into custody anyone in connection with the killing.

Alexis Gossett, 22, killed in stabbing on west side
Aug. 24: Police responded to a report of a person stabbed just after 1 a.m. on the 6700 block of West 15th Street.
When police arrived they found Alexis Gossett, 22, suffering from injuries consistent with trauma. She was taken to an area hospital, where medical personnel pronounced her dead.
Police detained one person of interest at the scene.

Edward Gray Jr., 48, killed in shooting on East 34th Street
Aug. 23: Officers responded to a report of a person shot just before 11 a.m. on the 1700 block of East 34th Street.
When police arrived they found Edward Gray Jr., 48, suffering from gunshot wounds. Medical personnel pronounced Gray dead at the scene.
Police arrested 43-year-old Vincent Price in the killing.

George Barnett Nelson Sr., 56, dies in a shooting on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street
Aug. 21: Police responded to a report of shots fired about 8:50 p.m. in the 2600 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street, near its intersection with West 26th Street.
When police arrived they found George Barnett Nelson Sr., 56, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to a hospital in critical condition but died a few hours later.
About 11:53 p.m. and roughly 9 miles away in the 2000 block of North Bancroft Street near East 21st Street, police were called to reports of shots fired. When officers arrived they found a vehicle they believe is linked to the shooting on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street.
Police detained and arrested at least one man in connection with Nelson’s killing and an arrest was made Aug. 26.

Jaleal Daeshawn Hurt, 19, dead in shooting on Udell Street
Aug 20: Police responded to a report of shots fired at about 3:30 a.m. in the 600 block of Udell Street, near the intersection of West 29th Street and Dr. MLK Jr. Street.
When police arrived they found Jaleal Daeshawn Hurt, 19, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police believed the shooting was between two residents.
Police have not announced an arrest in the case.

Shooting on West Vermont Street leaves Brandon Lerez Groves, 40, dead
Aug 19: Shortly after 2 p.m., police responded to a report of a person shot in the 4100 block of West Vermont Street.
When emergency medical personnel arrived, and located Brandon Lerez Groves, 40, who suffered gunshot wounds. Police attempted to render aid but pronounced that person dead.
Police are investigating this shooting and have not yet determined if it was related to a shooting that occurred on West Michigan Street about the same time.

Nathaniel Lee Thomas, 21, shot dead on West Michigan Street
Aug. 19: Shortly before 2 p.m., police responded to a report of a person shot on the 3600 block of West Michigan Street.
When police arrived, they located Nathaniel Lee Thomas, 21, with gunshot wounds, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are investigating this shooting and have not yet determined if it was related to a shooting that occurred on West Vermont Street.

Lawrence police investigate triple homicide on Post Road
Aug. 18: Three people were killed in a shooting in Lawrence near East 42nd Street and North Post Road.
Officers responding to the shooting before 10 p.m. found two men dead at the scene and another was taken to the hospital but did not survive.
Witnesses told officers that a vehicle fleeing after the shooting crashed at the intersection of 38th Street and Post Road, according to Fox59, and the people in the vehicle ran away.
As of Monday morning, Lawrence police had not announced any suspects in the case.
Daniel Alberto Morales Uribe, 38, and Candido Eustaquio Antunez Escobar, 35, were identified by the Marion County Coroner’s Office. One other person killed was not publicly identified pending notification of next of kin.
Ashley Nolan, 41, dies in murder-suicide on Watersonway Circle
Aug 12: Shortly before 9 p.m., Indianapolis police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance on the 600 block of Watersonway Circle.
While en route gunshots could be heard by authorities. When police arrived they located two teenagers who had suffered gunshot wounds inside the residence and two dead adults, 43-year-old Thomas Joseph Nolan and 41-year-old Ashley Nolan, in the backyard of the residence.
Detectives believed this was a domestic-related murder-suicide. The Marion County Coroner’s Office ruled Thomas Nolan’s death a suicide.
Emergency medical personnel took the two teenagers to the hospital, one was in stable condition and the other was in critical condition.
Indianapolis police said Thomas Nolan was an IMPD Reserve officer who retired in May of 2024. Police said the investigation is ongoing.

Jazmine Johnson, 34, killed in shooting on Division Street
Aug. 11: Just before 2 p.m., Indianapolis police responded to reports about a person shot in the 900 block of Division Street.
Responding officers found 34-year-old Jazmine Johnson with gunshot wounds outside the front of a residence. Emergency medical personnel pronounced her dead.
Police detained two people in the area, though their connection is unclear. One was released and the other was arrested on unrelated charges. Police said the investigation is ongoing.

Reynaldo Serrano, 23, dies after shooting on Jefferson Avenue
Aug 11: Indianapolis police were called after 1:30 a.m. on August 10 to a report of a vehicle crash in the 100 block of North Jefferson Avenue.
Responding officers found 23-year-old Reynaldo Serrano suffering gunshot wounds inside a vehicle. Emergency medical personnel took him in critical condition to a hospital. On August 11, doctors pronounced him dead.
No suspect information or detail about what led up to the crash has been released.

Saad Dine Riha, 32, dies in shooting on Shore Terrace
Aug 9: Indianapolis police responded to a report of a person shot Friday evening on the 6800 block of Shore Terrace.
When police arrived they located, Saad Dine Riha, 32, who had suffered gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical personnel arrived shortly after and pronounced Riha dead.
No additional information about what led up to the shooting or who may have been involved was immediately released.

Police investigate the death of Ezra Aubion Graham, 20
Aug 9: Indianapolis police responded to a report of a person shot in the 4700 block of Madison Avenue Friday evening.
Police located Ezra Aubion Graham, 20, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was later pronounced dead.
No additional information about what led up to the shooting or who may have been involved was immediately released.
Stephen Brooks, 36, dies in shooting on North Central Avenue
Aug 7: Shortly after noon on Wednesday, Indianapolis police responded to a report of a possible dead person at the 3400 block of North Central Avenue on the north side of the city.
When police arrived they found an unresponsive man who appeared dead. Police called homicide detectives to investigate.
Homicide detectives later determined that the man had suffered gunshot wounds and opened an investigation Aug. 9, 2024. The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the man as 36-year-old Stephen Brooks.
No additional information about what led up to the shooting or who may be involved was immediately released.

Police investigating the death of Yolanda Renee Shields, 38
Aug. 4: Indianapolis police responded to the 3300 block of North Shadeland Avenue for a death investigation Sunday afternoon on the east side of the city.
When police arrived they found Yolanda Renee Shields, 38, who had injuries consistent with trauma. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Monday morning, the Marion County coroner’s office ruled that Shields’ death a homicide.
No additional information about what led up to the attack or who may be involved was immediately released.
