MPS closes Summer Academy, indoor rec sites due to heat

The Summer Academy, Extended Learning Opportunities program and all indoor Milwaukee Recreation sites will be closed July 14 and 15 because of the extreme heat advisory, Milwaukee Public Schools announced in a July 13 news release.

MPS Superintendent Brenda Cassellius said the decision was made in consultation with Milwaukee Health Commissioner Dr. Michael Totoraitis.

“Our top priority is the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community,” Cassellius said.

Heat index values up to 103 is expected during the stretch, according to the National Weather Service.

The district expects to resume normal operations Thursday, July 16, pending updated weather conditions.

What is closed?

Summer Academy and ELO sites will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday. No classes or indoor activities will take place during the closure, according to the district.

All indoor Milwaukee Recreation school sites also will be closed.

Playground sites with splash pads and wading pools will remain open to help families stay cool. MPS said children should always be supervised by an adult at splash pads and swimming pools.

Will summer meals still be available?

Yes.

Meals will continue to be available at 13 Milwaukee Recreation meal sites located around Milwaukee. Those who receive meals must remain on site to eat.

Cassellius encouraged all MPS families and staff to review Milwaukee Health Department tips for staying safe in hot weather.

“Please look out for one another, check on vulnerable neighbors, stay hydrated, and utilize the city’s open splash pads and wading pools to stay cool,” Cassellius said.
