U.S. Rep. Ronny Jackson vies to lead group important to military

U.S. Rep. Ronny Jackson will make a bid for the top spot on a congressional committee important to the military and Sheppard Air Force Base.

Jackson, R-Amarillo, announced his intention to run for chairman of the House Armed Services Committee in media releases from his campaign and congressional offices on Monday. His 13th Congressional District includes Wichita Falls.

“Through more than 25 years in the U.S. Navy and throughout my service in Congress, I have remained committed to ensuring our military remains the strongest, most capable fighting force in the world,” Jackson said in a media release.

“As Chairman, I will fight to advance military readiness, make critical investments in our national defense, and always put our servicemembers and their families first,” he said.

Jackson, who formerly served as President Donald Trump’s physician, is a retired Navy rear admiral and a three-term congressman.

“With the support of my colleagues, I will lead the Committee in delivering the authorities necessary to ensure our military is prepared to meet the growing threats posed by our adversaries,” Jackson said. “Together, we will work to keep America free and safe.”

He is serving as chairman of the HASC’s Intelligence and Special Operations Subcommittee. Jackson is also a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

He is not alone in making a bid to replace Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Alabama, the current HASC chairman.

Jackson’s competition includes Rep. Rob Wittman, R-Virginia, and Rep. Trent Kelly, R-Mississippi, Politico reported Monday.
