A travel magazine named one California hotel among the best in the continental United States for 2026. Have you been?
Travel + Leisure, a travel magazine, recently released the results of its yearly World’s Best Awards.
The publication held its 31st annual survey and asked its readers to vote for the best stays around the world.
“In this year’s survey, more than 661,000 votes were cast—on city and island escapes, safari outfitters, airlines, and hotels around the world,” Travel + Leisure says.
More than 207,000 readers cast their votes across more than 10,088 properties, including hotels, cruise lines, resorts, and airlines.
One category was the best city hotels in the continental U.S., which had one entry in the Golden State place near the top.
What is the best city hotel in the U.S.?
Travel + Leisure surveyed its readers to identify the best hotels across the country, with each hotel offering “exceptional service that turns inquisitive travelers into return guests.”
The XV Beacon in Boston, Massachusetts, was voted the best city hotel in the continental U.S. by Travel+ Leisure readers.
“This 63-room Beacon Hill boutique channels the city’s historic spirit with a lavish art collection and a prime location just a block from Boston Common,” the magazine says.
California had one hotel break into the magazine’s top 15 city hotels, and it also landed in the top 5.
Santa Monica Proper Hotel in Santa Monica ranked No. 5 among the best city hotels and as the best hotel in the greater Los Angeles area.
While the magazine did not describe what landed the hotel its high place, the hotel’s website says it has 262 rooms and suites with spaces that flow with light, layered textures and sculptural details.
The hotel features amenities such as a fitness center, spa with red light therapy and rooftop yoga.

The Santa Monica Proper Hotel was rated with three dollar signs out of four on Travel + Leisure’s site, among the higher-end in the top 15.
A single-night stay for Wednesday, July 8, through Thursday, July 9, starts at $599 on Expedia.com, which the magazine linked on its page.
