The National Weather Service is raising the alarm about a heat wave that is about to impact Northeast Ohio.

An Extreme Heat Warning has been issued for Greater Akron through 8 p.m. Thursday, July 2.

The weather service says “dangerously hot conditions” are expected with the so-called real feel temperatures to exceed 107 degrees.

“Heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events,” the weather service said. “The prolonged nature of the heat event with little overnight relief through the week will increase impacts to vulnerable populations.”

Residents are urged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioning if possible and limit exposure to the sun.

Daily highs in the upper 90s are expected through Friday.

It could reach nearly 100 degrees on Thursday.

The risk of showers on Saturday, July 4, could bring some small relief as temperatures will be in the lower 90s.

Some Northeast Ohio communities, including Akron and Cuyahoga Falls, are taking special precautions and opening up cooling centers.

Akron has extended hours at the Summit Lake Community Center, 380 W. Crosier St., through Thursday, July 2 to provide a cool place for residents.

And Cuyahoga Falls is opening up its Natatorium for residents seeking relief.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and state Emergency Management officials have issued an “urgent” Safety Alert warning residents of the potential dangers of the expected high temperatures.

State officials say extreme heat is responsible for more weather-related deaths than any other hazard.

What’s the normal temperature in Akron?

The anticipated string of 90-plus degree days is a bit out of the norm for Greater Akron.

The typical high for this time of year is around 84 degrees.

And several weather records will likely be broken given the forecast highs of anywhere from 98 to 99 degrees.

Some of the weather records for daily highs in the coming days date back to 1911.
