The week of June 21-27 was another exciting week of high school baseball featuring teams from the Des Moines metro area.
Indianola, the No. 2 team in Class 4A, defeated 3A No. 10 Ballard, swept Norwalk and downed Bettendorf, Pella Christian and Newton. Waukee, ranked No. 5 in 4A, scored a 6-1 rivalry win over No. 10 Waukee Northwest and victories over 3A No. 9 Saydel and Sergeant Bluff-Luton at the Prange Classic on June 26.
Northwest defeated 4A No. 7 Urbandale, and Urbandale picked up wins over Ankeny, Des Moines Christian and Webster City. Carlisle, the No. 6 team in 3A, defeated Centerville, Gilbert, West Marshall, Dallas Center-Grimes and 3A No. 8 Bishop Heelan.
There were several outstanding individual performances from high school baseball players from the metro area during the week.
Here are the Des Moines Register’s male Athlete of the Week candidates from the Des Moines metro area for the week of June 21-27. DesMoinesRegister.com readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.
Brayden Moore, Waukee
Moore threw six strong innings for the Class 4A No. 5 Waukee baseball team during its 6-1 rivalry win over No. 10 Waukee Northwest on June 22 at Northwest.
Moore gave up one run on five hits with seven strikeouts and no walks as the winning pitcher. He also went 1-for-3 with a sacrifice at the plate.
Luke Karaidos, Urbandale
Karaidos helped power 4A No. 7 Urbandale to wins over Webster City (7-6) and Des Moines Christian (11-10) on June 26 at the Prange Classic in Ankeny.
Karaidos was 1-for-2 with a walk, steal and two runs in the victory over Webster City. He went 3-for-3 with a double, run, steal and three RBIs in the victory over Des Moines Christian.
Isaac Burk, Carlisle
Burk helped 3A No. 6 Carlisle down No. 8 Bishop Heelan by an 8-3 score at the Prange Classic on June 27 at Grimes.
Burk went 3-for-4 with a double during the victory. He finished the game with four RBIs.
George Blake, Indianola
Blake pitched the Indianola baseball team past Norwalk, 5-1, in the first game of a doubleheader on June 24 at Norwalk.
Blake threw all seven innings and allowed one earned run on four hits and three walks with seven strikeouts. Blake added a double, walk, two steals and run at the plate for the Indians.
Alex Williams, Southeast Polk
Williams threw an outstanding game for the Southeast Polk baseball team during a 5-1 victory over Ankeny on June 25 at Pleasant Hill.
Williams went 6 1/3 innings and he gave up just one hit as the winning pitcher. He was overpowering all night, finishing with 13 strikeouts and only two walks.
