The week of June 21-27 was another eventful week of high school softball featuring teams from the Des Moines metro area.
A doubleheader between Class 5A No. 1 Waukee Northwest and No. 2 Ankeny Centennial on June 25 resulted in a split, with Northwest claiming a 7-3 and Centennial winning a 9-7 slugfest. Northwest also split with No. 3 Valley on June 24 in West Des Moines, with each team earning a 6-3 win.
Dallas Center-Grimes, the No. 4 team in 5A, defeated 4A No. 2 Carlisle in a 6-5 battle on June 22 in Grimes. Carlisle later fell to 5A No. 11 Cedar Rapids Prairie (3-1) and defeated 2A No. 12 Iowa City Regina (3-2) and 4A No. 7 Clear Creek-Amana (7-0) at the CCA Softball Tournament on June 26-27.
There were several other exciting games featuring teams from the metro area during the week. The week also saw several impressive individual performances by high school softball players from the area.
Here are the Des Moines Register’s female Athlete of the Week candidates from the Des Moines metro area for the week of June 21-27. DesMoinesRegister.com readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.
Maggie Allen, Waukee Northwest
Allen had a great all-around game for the 5A No. 1 Waukee Northwest softball team during its 7-3 victory over No. 2 Centennial as part of a doubleheader on June 25 at Waukee.
Allen finished the game 2-for-3 with a double, steal, run and RBI on offense. Allen also played great at shortstop, recording two assists and one putout with no errors.
Kori Lincicum, Ankeny Centennial
Lincicum came up huge for the Centennial softball team during its 9-7 victory over No. 1 Waukee Northwest as part of a doubleheader on June 25 at Waukee.
Lincicum went 3-for-3 with two home runs to help the Jaguars rally from a 7-3 deficit for the win. She was the winning pitcher and ended the game with two runs scored and three RBIs.
Avery Nelson, Ankeny
Nelson provided a big spark for the Ankeny softball team during an 11-9 victory over Dowling Catholic on June 23 at West Des Moines.
Nelson went 3-for-4 with a triple against the Maroons. She scored four runs and added one steal.
Chloe Roling, Carlisle
Roling helped 4A No. 2 Carlisle cruise to a 12-0 Raccoon River Conference victory over Gilbert on June 25 at Gilbert.
Roling was perfect at the plate for the Wildcats, going 3-for-3 with one sacrifice hit. Roling swiped two bases, scored one run and picked up three RBIs during the victory.
Grace Bell, Des Moines Roosevelt
Bell came up with timely hits in both games of the 5A No. 13 Des Moines Roosevelt softball team’s 5-4, 3-1 sweep over Ottumwa on June 25 in Des Moines.
Bell went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the first game. She singled and drove in a run in her only at-bat during the nightcap.
