As training camp approaches, we move a little bit closer to finding out how serious Aaron Donald is about a potential return to the field. He’s already said he’s flirting with the idea of coming out of retirement and the Los Angeles Rams’ trade for Myles Garrett has him thinking about playing again, but there’s been no movement since.
It’s very much still a possibility, though.
Vincent Bonsignore of the New York Post reported on Sunday that league sources told him Donald is “seriously contemplating coming out of retirement,” which is the firmest report we’ve gotten about the situation all offseason.
There’s been a lot of speculation from analysts and hinting from players, but it seems some around the league believe it’s a real possibility. Bonsignore added that “the sense within league circles is that this could actually happen.”
Multiple league sources indicate the greatest defensive player in Rams history is seriously contemplating coming out of retirement to lend a massive helping hand to the club’s Super Bowl aspirations.
Donald hasn’t played since the 2023 season, sitting out the last two years after retiring in 2024. The Rams have rebuilt their defensive line shockingly fast thanks to players such as Kobie Turner, Braden Fiske, Byron Young and Jared Verse, but Donald would still provide a huge boost to an already talented group.
There’s never been a case in NFL history where multiple-time Defensive Player of the Year winners have been on the same team, but that’s an opportunity the Rams have to make happen if Donald returns.
He and Myles Garrett individually are both the stuff of nightmares for linemen and quarterbacks. Together, they’d terrorize opposing offenses. The ball is in Donald’s court as we wait to see what the future holds for him and the Rams.
