A swimmer drowned over the weekend in the Hoosic River in Rensselaer County, according to New York State Police.
Missing swimmer
Emergency responders were called to the Hoosic River – a tributary of the Hudson River – by State Route 67 near the intersection of Beck Road just after 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 27 to investigate the report for an “unaccounted swimmer,” troopers said in a news release.
Troopers learned that a family had been swimming in the area in Hoosick, Rensselaer County, when an adult swimmer became distressed due to a strong current, went underwater and did not resurface, according to State Police.
Swimmer found nearby
First responders searched the water and located the missing swimmer nearby. The swimmer was pronounced dead. The swimmer’s name was not released.
Cause
The drowning appears to be accidental, according to State Police. The investigation continues.
Officials from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office, Hoosick Falls Police Department and emergency responders from several area fire departments and rescue squads assisted at the scene.
