MassMu history group to discuss summer picnics, city's celebrations

Did you ever watch the Fourth of July fireworks ground show from the west side stands of Tiger Stadium? Do you remember the “Buy Your Own Boom” campaign to raise funds for the old-fashioned Picnic in the Park and fireworks at Stadium Park? Have you lived in a neighborhood with summer block parties? Did you drive the Lincoln Highway on any of your vacations?

Bring memories and mementoes to share with MassMu’s History Discussion Group from 10 a.m. to noon July 7. Moderator Mandy Altimus Stahl will lead a discussion of Independence Day, picnics and summer vacations.

The History Discussion Group meets in the Fred F. Silk Community Room in the museum’s lower level. The museum is fully accessible. Attendance is free and open to everyone; new participants are always welcome. Pastries and coffee are available for a donation.

Some guests attend to share their stories, while others come to learn about the town’s past. Many people attend every session on the first Tuesday of every month. Others attend only when the topic especially interests them. No reservations are necessary.

The Massillon Museum receives ArtsBuild funding from ArtsinStark, made possible by the support of the Stark County community through ArtsinStark’s annual Campaign for the Arts. The Massillon Museum also receives operating support from the Ohio Arts Council and marketing support from Visit Canton.

The TWiLite Café, located in the museum’s lobby, will be open before and after the discussion session. The museum’s shop is open throughout the Museum’s regular open hours.

MassMu is at 121 Lincoln Way E in downtown Massillon. Free parking is available on adjacent streets and in nearby city lots. For more information, call 330-833-4061 or visit massillonmuseum.org.
