A 33-year-old woman died and two children in her car were badly injured when another vehicle ran a stop sign and struck their car broadside in Apple Valley on Saturday night, authorities said.
Lorena Lopez of Apple Valley died in the collision, which took place about 8:20 p.m. June 27 at Wichita and Zuni roads, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department officials and coroner’s records.
She was driving a 2021 Nissan Altima west on Zuni Road with two passengers, sheriff’s officials said in a written statement.
At the same time, a 25-year-old Apple Valley man was traveling north on Wichita Road in a 2022 Toyota Camry.
The driver of the Toyota “failed to stop at the posted stop sign on Wichita Road at Zuni Road and broadsided [the Nissan],” the statement said.
The driver was pulled from his car as it caught fire and taken to a hospital for treatment, sheriff’s officials said.
Lopez died at the scene.
The two passengers from her car were taken to trauma centers to receive “a high level of care,” the statement said. They were initially described as a boy and a girl.
The cause and circumstances of the collision were being investigated by a Sheriff’s Major Accident Investigative Team.
