Peoria man receives 90 years in prison for fatal drive-by shooting

An 18-year-old man was sentenced to 90 years in prison Friday after he shot and killed a 20-year-old man in a drive-by shooting in June 2025.

Lamar Cagle was found guilty of first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm last October in the shooting death of Teron M. Scott on June 20, 2025, in the 300 block of South MacArthur Highway near Martin Luther King Jr. Park. A second gunshot victim received non-life-threatening injuries.

During a sentencing hearing Friday, Peoria County Circuit Judge Paul Bauer handed down a nine-decade sentence, saying that he hoped Cagle would someday realize the seriousness of his actions.

According to the Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office, prosecutors asked for a 95-year prison sentence, with testimony shown connecting Cagle to the “Snakes,” a street gang that was in conflict with the “Jump-Out Boys” for several years, causing violence across the city.

Prosecutors said that even though Cagle had the support of friends, family and coaches, he still chose to be involved with the “Snakes” and commit murder.

Bauer sentenced Cagle to 65 years in the murder case, with 25 years being tacked on for aggravated battery. The terms will be served consecutively.

The state’s attorney’s office said that Peoria police responded to the scene of the shooting at 2:45 a.m. on June 20, 2025. Scott was found dead at the wheel of a vehicle that had crashed into a tree at the park, with a gunshot wound to his head. A second victim was be transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Surveillance video captured the shooting, showing Cagle’s vehicle driving recklessly across city streets to catch up to Scott’s car, crossing into oncoming traffic before coming up alongside the vehicle and engaging in gunfire.

Peoria police officers eventually identified the vehicle and recovered dash camera footage showing Cagle discussing being one of the shooters. Officers also recovered three sets of shell casings, confirming that multiple firearms had been used in the shooting.

Cagle was been the third person arrested in Scott’s murder, with Kemareon D. Bell, 19, and Christopher P. Adams, 21, also charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery. Both of their cases remain pending, with Bell set for trial on Sept. 28, and Adams set for a Sept. 8 trial.
