Canton, organizations to open cooling centers with high temps expected

CANTON − The city, the Stark County District Library and other organizations will open 15 cooling centers, eight of them in Canton, the week of June 29.

Temperatures are forecast to soar well into the 90s, the city said in a statement on June 26.

The Stark Area Regional Transit Authority will provide free transportation to the cooling centers. Those wishing to get a free ride to a cooling center can board any fixed-route bus bound for the Cornerstone Transit Center on Cherry Avenue SE. No one will have to pay a fare to get to a cooling center.

Those seeking transportation outside of SARTA’s service hours can call Canton City Dispatch at (330) 649-5800 to get help to get transportation to a cooling center.

Each day from Monday, June 29, to Friday, July 3, during varying daytime hours, the public can visit cooling centers at:

The second floor of Crossroads United Methodist Church at 120 Cleveland Ave. SW in Canton is a cooling center but only 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from Tuesday, June 30, to Friday, July 3.

All 11 locations of the Stark County District Library will be cooling centers 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, June 29 to Thursday, July 2. And 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, July 3, Canton’s statement said.
