Milwaukee Bucks reporter Jim Owczarski has followed the intricacies of the Milwaukee Bucks for several years, from the mountaintop of an NBA championship to the slow-developing distance between the organization and its star player, Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Owczarski documented blow-by-blow the behind-the-scenes drama that ultimately led to the franchise parting ways with Antetokounmpo, trading him to the Miami Heat. It’s a three-year descent that first began with the firing of head coach Mike Budenholzer and the decisions that have followed.
On June 26, he chatted at length about his process: How the story came together, why certain details are just emerging now and whether he’d classify the Bucks as “dysfunctional.”
“Through this whole process, this wasn’t a foregone conclusion,” Owczarski said. “This is a story, really, based on emotions and feelings that were hurt, damaged maybe, and became unrepairable. But it didn’t mean they couldn’t be. … It was one of those things where honestly, when we were writing this and editing this, I had to tell our editors, ‘This may never see the light of day. There’s a chance they’ll fix this and no one will ever know this.'”
