LAFAYETTE, IN — An 86-year-old Lafayette man reported he was conned out of $27,000 by an internet scammer, according to the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department.
The man told police he searched online for a reputable antivirus company to work on his computer. When he reached out to what he believed was the antivirus company, they responded on Monday, according to the sheriff’s department. The Lafayette man gave the person from the antivirus company control of his computer so he could work on it.
The next day, the man noticed $24,000 taken from his bank account, according to the sheriff’s department reports. The person he worked with the day before reached out to the Lafayette man and said they mistakenly moved the decimal point, and that they would fix it.
By Thursday, the man was still out the $24,000 and an additional $3,000, according to reports.
