Bring on the bubbles, fireworks and the fair! This weekend is not only the beginning of the Monroe County Fair, which starts with fireworks on Friday, June 26, but there’s outdoor movies in the park and WonderLab’s Bubblefest on Saturday — something for everyone.
Fireworks on Friday start of the Monroe County Fair
This year’s Monroe County Fair begins with fireworks on Friday, June 26. Gates open at 7 p.m. Friday for the fireworks that begin at dusk. Admission is $10 per vehicle. There will be a special cruise-in before the fireworks begin, so get there early if you can ― at 5700 W. Airport Road.
The fair actually begins Saturday, June 27, and runs through July 5. But for 4-Hers and others, the fair activities have already begun. First up are the the Little Miss, Princess and Queen contests, beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for youth ages 6-12. ‘Dial M for Murder’ at Rev. Ernest D. Butler Park
Bring a blanket, some chairs and a picnic if you want for “Dial M for Murder 2D,” with begins at 9:15 p.m. Friday, June 27, in Rev. Ernest D. Butler Park for the city’s next free Movies in the Park film, presented by Bloomington Parks and Recreation and Cicada Cinema. The PG-rated film is a classic Alfred Hitchcock thriller from 1954. It features Grace Kelly in a captivating game of cat-and-mouse that could have deadly consequences.
Bubbles abound at WonderLab on Saturday, Sunday
Join in the fun from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 27, and 1:30-5 p.m. Sunday at WonderLab Museum of Science, Health and Technology for the annual all-ages Bubblefest fun. Explore the science of bubbles through hands-on activities, interactive demonstrations and larger-than-life bubble fun. From tiny shimmering spheres to giant floating bubbles, kids and grown-ups alike can experiment, create, and watch bubbles do amazing things. It happens at 308 W. Fourth St. It’s free for members and $14.50 for non-members or $5 with an access pass.
Classic music, old-fashioned yard sale on Saturday
Bloomington Restorations Inc. (BRI) invites everyone to the monthly Museum Open Day at the Hinkle-Garton Farmstead, 2920 E. 10th St., from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The farmhouse will be open for tours; the yard sale will end at 3 p.m.
For former owners, Daisy and Joe Garton were musicians who played, taught and wrote music. BRI celebrates them on Saturday by featuring 250 years of American music. Live musical entertainment will include the Bloomington Peace Choir, the UkeTones, and Entwyned, along with several more participants and ensembles performing light classical piano music, classical flute duets, popular renditions of old-school tunes, eclectic older and newer pop tunes, goldies duets, country story-telling songs, and vocal/guitar delights.
Daisy Hinkle Garton was a collector of many things and attended estate and yard sales. BRI celebrates her this summer by hosting the yard sale. All proceeds will benefit the Hinkle Garton Farmstead. No clothing will be available at the sale.
Try some archaeology at the public library
From 3-4 p.m. Saturday, June 27, people of all ages are welcome to be part of the archaeology program at the Monroe County Public Library, 303 E. Kirkwood Ave. Ever want to know what archaeologists do and what tools they use to study humanity’s past? Come to the downtown library and learn with hands-on activities. The program is in partnership with the Indiana University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.
