Essential advice for summer air travel planning

Summer travel season is underway, and many families are preparing for vacations, business trips, and long-awaited getaways. Whether you are flying for the first time in years or travel frequently, planning ahead can help reduce stress, avoid unnecessary costs, and protect you from travel-related scams.

From booking flights to arriving safely at your destination, a few simple steps can make air travel smoother and more enjoyable.

Compare flights carefully

Before booking, take time to compare flight prices across multiple airlines and travel websites. Setting up fare alerts can help you track price changes and identify better deals.

Booking flights several weeks in advance often results in lower prices, especially during busy travel seasons. Flexible travel dates may also help reduce costs, particularly when flying midweek or during less popular travel times. Nearby airports may offer lower fares as well. Sometimes a short drive can save travelers a significant amount of money.

Understand fees before booking

The cheapest ticket is not always the best value. Additional costs for baggage, seat selection, Wi-Fi, or other services can add up quickly.

Read the fine print carefully before completing a purchase. Cancellation policies, refund rules, and travel insurance coverage can vary widely between airlines, booking websites, and travel agencies. Research airlines and booking companies before making reservations. Customer reviews can provide insight into service quality, delays, hidden fees, and refund experiences.

Prepare before leaving home

Travelers should make sure everyone flying has proper identification before heading to the airport. REAL ID enforcement began May 7, 2025, so confirm identification requirements before traveling.

Packing light can help avoid baggage fees and reduce the chances of lost luggage. For shorter trips, consider using only a carry-on bag. It is also helpful to keep emergency contact information accessible, including airline customer service numbers and important travel documents.

Arrive early and stay informed

The Department of Transportation recommends arriving at the airport at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights. This allows time for security screening, delays, and unexpected issues.

Many airlines offer mobile apps with real-time flight updates. Monitoring flight information before leaving for the airport and throughout your trip can help you respond quickly to delays or gate changes. Travelers should also review TSA guidelines ahead of time to avoid delays at security checkpoints.

Protect your belongings

Busy airports can create opportunities for theft and scams. Keep identification, boarding passes, wallets, and electronics secure and within sight.

Be cautious of strangers offering transportation or assistance at baggage claim areas. Use official airport transportation services, verified rideshare apps, or authorized taxis. Before leaving the plane, double-check seat pockets, overhead bins, and under-seat areas for important items such as phones, medications, passports, or chargers.

Watch for travel scams after your trip

Scammers may also target travelers after flights end. Be cautious of unsolicited emails or text messages claiming you are owed refunds, compensation, or travel vouchers.

These messages may be phishing attempts designed to steal personal or financial information. Avoid clicking unfamiliar links and report suspicious activity to BBB Scam Tracker. Travel plans can change quickly, but informed travelers are better prepared to avoid problems and enjoy their trip with greater peace of mind.
