Does taking a bite out of summer fruit and vegetables mean an extra bite at the wallet these days?
This week’s Journal News/lohud.com grocery poll question is three-fold: First, do you think prices for produce have gone up in the Lower Hudson Valley or not? If you do think they’ve increased, which vegetable and fruit have you noticed rise in cost the most?
Produce become more vital as summer unfolds, when fruit and vegetables can become a bigger part of meals.
Instacart says these summer veggies and fruits are most popular
Instacart, which provides grocery delivery services, took a look at fresh-produce orders in the United States from 2023 to 2025 and had a survey done by Harris Poll of more than 2,000 Americans to see which produce were most popular.
Strawberries finished first across the full summer. But for the Fourth of July, corn, watermelon and cherries were popular. The survey for Instacart found that corn peaked on July 6. Watermelon and cherries did so on July 8.
Instacart found the top summer fruits were, from 1 to 10: Strawberries, limes, lemons, watermelons, blueberries, yellow peaches, plums, yellow nectarines, cantaloupe melons, and red cherries.
The top vegetables were, from 1 to 10: English cucumbers, sweet corn, tomatoes on the vine, red onions, romaine lettuce, green zucchini, mini cucumbers, yellow corn, mixed bell peppers, and beefsteak tomatoes.
Some fruits’ popularity increases in August, the survey found: donut peaches, white peaches, white nectarines, pluots, and plums.
