A little more than two months after a two-vehicle crash killed a woman and seriously injured her husband in Silver Springs Shores, Florida Highway Patrol troopers have arrested the driver who they say is responsible.
Here’s what we know:
What’s the name of the defendant? Deshawn Williams, 18.
When was Williams arrested? On June 24. He was booked into the Marion County Jail on charges of vehicular homicide, reckless driving involving serious injuries, and five counts of reckless driving involving property damage. He was being held without bail.
Where was the arrest? At the jail. Williams met with FHP Traffic Homicide Investigator Mark Baker, who’s heading the investigation, at the facility. Williams declined comment, and officials said he has an attorney.
When and where was the crash? April 19 at Pine Road and Hemlock Road in Silver Springs Shores.
Who died in the crash? How many people were injured? Amanda Dice, 48, died in the crash. Her husband, Roger, was seriously injured, FHP said. A family member said they’re hopeful he can recover from his injuries.
Williams and his cousin, who was a passenger in his vehicle, suffered minor injuries, FHP said.
What happened? FHP said the Dices were in a Hyundai Elantra that was westbound on Hemlock Road, approaching a stop sign. An Infiniti Q50, driven by Williams, was speeding northbound on Pine Road. Troopers said the vehicles collided at the intersection.
The Infiniti ran off the roadway to the right, onto a grassy shoulder, and hit a tall white privacy fence. The Hyundai went in the opposite direction and rested against a chest-high chain-link fence.
FHP said Roger Dice, who was the Hyundai’s driver, was ejected from the vehicle. He went over the fence, into a nearby yard, and his body hit the side of a home. He was taken to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital.
Amanda Dice had to be extricated from the car, which was mangled, FHP said.
Troopers said Williams and his cousin were on their way to visit another cousin when the crash occurred.
What was the Infiniti’s speed? According to troopers, it was moving at 90 mph one second before impact. The speed limit is 30 mph.
After the crash, neighbors told a Star-Banner reporter that motorists regularly speed on that road. The homeowner whose fence was damaged said this was the second time he was replacing the fence in less than a year.
