Centennial seeks new head football Coach after Jacob Turay resigns

St. Lucie West Centennial High School is looking for a new person to lead its football program.

Jacob Turay stepped down as the Eagles’ head coach on June 15 after three seasons at the helm. Centennial compiled a 10-21 record during his time as head coach. Following a 1-9 campaign in 2023, the team improved its record in each successive season.

The Eagles went 5-6 last season, earning a berth in the 4A-7A Florida Invitational Tournament.

Prior to succeeding Josh Watkins as head coach, Turay served as Centennial’s co-offensive coordinator and special teams coordinator during the 2022 season.

Four years later, he will return to the sidelines as a special teams coordinator after the position at Vero Beach High School.

Turay’s resignation represents the sixth head coaching vacancy among area football teams since the end of the 2025 season. The Eagles will join Port St. Lucie (Everette Alford), South Fork (Eric Kresser), Tradition Prep (Shannon Skelton), Legacy (Vincent DeAguila) and Okeechobee (Antwan Blatch) as Treasure Coast schools with a new head football coach roaming the sidelines.

It is also the second time in as many offseasons that an area school will look to fill that position during the summer. Lamalik Sherman was hired as the Jaguars head coach last July.

Centennial’s head football coaching position is listed open on the St. Lucie Public Schools website, with a deadline of Friday, June 26. Eagles athletic director Kristin Wetherall says the school has received a strong pool of applicants and is in the process of conducting interviews.

Wetherall noted the support the school’s football players have received as the team is in the middle of summer conditioning.

“The Centennial community, along with others from across St. Lucie County, came together in an incredible way to support our players during the transition,” Wetherall said. “It has been overwhelming in the best way possible, and our athletes felt that encouragement.“
