It’s been the summer of contract extensions for the New York Jets. After franchise tagging running back Breece Hall, the Jets agreed to a multi-year deal with their superstar ball carrier. More recently, interior offensive lineman Joe Tippmann inked a lucrative extension.
The rebuilding Jets have shown a willingness to establish a core foundation. Talents like Tippmann, Hall, and Garrett Wilson are long-term building blocks for Darren Mougey’s roster. Mougey may not be done negotiating extensions with his top players.
Bleacher Report recently outlined every team’s most important contract extension ahead of the 2026 campaign.
For the Jets, they selected veteran defensive tackle Harrison Phillips. Keeping Phillips via an extension wouldn’t be a bad idea for the Jets.
“The Jets shouldn’t be eager to sign a 30-year-old defensive tackle to an extension,” B/R admitted. “However, if anyone else on the roster deserves a new deal, it’s Phillips. He’s one of the league’s best run-stoppers and hasn’t missed a game since the 2021 season. Gang Green wouldn’t have to smash its piggybank to give him a deal because of his position on the premium scale, though his hard-nosed mentality can be a great example for a team that’s seen a lot of turnover over the past year.”
Phillips is slated to enter a contract year while carrying a reasonable cap charge of $7.5 million this season, per Spotrac. After being acquired from the Minnesota Vikings in a preseason trade last year, Phillips recorded 60 tackles as a premium run stopper for the Jets. Signing him to a reasonable and short-term extension would be a worthwhile decision.
