Fuel economy varies when it comes to SUVs. These can depend on multiple factors such as the size of the vehicle and engine type. Here are the SUVs that get the best gas mileage, based on a review in June of fueleconomy.gov and the online configurators of automakers.
Compact SUVs
The compact SUV segment is full of options with great gas mileage since they are small and most use four-cylinder engines. This class also has many hybrid options. The Kia Niro hybrid is the most efficient of them all with its 54 combined mpg.

Medium sized SUVs
While the medium tier may not get the same mpg as the compact SUVs, this class tends to have more options. The Kia Sorento leads the group with a combined mpg of 37. It also has a third row of seating, even though it’s a small one.

Full-sized SUVs
Full-sized SUVs are normally bought because they are spacious with luxurious interiors. While many buyers of this segment may not be looking for fuel efficiency, there are still some diesel and hybrid vehicles in this class getting solid gas mileage. The Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid is able to reach 37 miles in the city and 34 on the highway.
