Abu Sama and Darrion Dupree seemed to be the clear favorites to bring order to a crowded running back group at Wisconsin.
The Badgers were likely headed for a two-back system if they stayed healthy. Despite adding transfers and young talent, the depth chart still points to these two players as the ones most likely to handle the most meaningful carries.
Sama started the season as the most complete option. He rushed for over 700 yards and averaged 5.2 yards per carry last year. He played with a physical style that matched Wisconsin’s identity, becoming a back they could rely on for early downs.
Dupree was just behind him, coming off a rough season playing behind an offensive line that had its struggles. Still, he showed big-play potential, especially with a memorable run against Illinois.
Wisconsin’s current running back depth chart
Wisconsin’s next tier of backs brought size, skill, and backup options. Bryan Jackson joined as a strong transfer from USC after dealing with injuries, giving the Badgers another possible short-yardage option if he stays fit.
Nate Palmer, a sophomore transfer from TCU, provided another solid player who looked like he would fit better into a longer-term role unless injuries pushed him into the spotlight. JUCO athlete Julius Pope also entered the group, bringing potential despite needing time to grow.
Tyler Jansey, a converted linebacker, completes the depth chart. They were likely to see special teams and situational snaps if Sama and Dupree remained healthy. The next important step for Wisconsin will be when the coaching staff starts deciding on rotation and goal-line responsibilities, with Sama and Dupree at the heart of every early-season carry plan.
