Colts roster breakdown: Who's a lock, on the bubble at safety

With minicamp behind us, let’s break down the Indianapolis Colts’ roster through a different lens.

In this series, we will be going position-by-position and placing each player into one of three categories — are they a lock to make the team, likely to make the team, or on the bubble and fighting for a role?

What this exercise can do is help bring into focus how many roster spots are actually available this summer, along with highlighting who may be on the outside and looking in.

Up next are the safeties.

Roster locks (3): Cam Bynum, AJ Haulcy, Hunter Wohler

Bynum will lead the way at this position, while Haulcy may be the favorite for the starting role next to him. Wohler is a recent draft pick who appeared to be on his way to earning snaps last season prior to his injury. He could carve out a rotational role in defensive-back-heavy formations.

More likely than not to make the team (2): Jonathan Owens, Juanyeh Thomas

On my latest roster prediction, I have both Owens and Thomas on the team. That said, despite being recent free agent signings, the Colts can get out of these deals easily if someone else emerges or if the team keeps just four safeties, which they did in 2025.

On the bubble (4): Trey Washington, Daniel Scott, Ben Nikkel, Austin Brown

Oftentimes, teams roster five safeties on the 53-man, which could mean each roster spot for the Colts is already accounted for. The practice squad may be the more likely landing spot for one or two of these players.

However, the best chance for one of these players to make the team is to surpass Owens or Thomas on the depth chart. Being versatile on defense and contributing on special teams can be two differentiators.
