Springfield Local business manager to become Tallmadge school treasurer

Dustin Boswell has been named treasurer of the Tallmadge City School District.

Boswell, who will succeed retiring longtime Treasurer Jeff Hostetler, currently works as the business manager for the Springfield Local School District, a position he began in 2015. He started at Springfield in 2009 as the technology director and has spent more than 24 years in school administration, finance, operations and strategic planning.

“Dustin’s experience in school finance, his commitment to transparency and his collaborative leadership style make him an excellent fit for Tallmadge City Schools,” Tallmadge Board President Mike Passarelli said in a news release. “As our district continues to navigate significant financial challenges, we are confident that Dustin has the knowledge and expertise needed to help guide Tallmadge forward.”

Boswell, who earned a bachelor’s degree in management information systems from the University of Akron, holds an Ohio school treasurer license and a school business manager license. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the Ohio Association of School Business Officials and the Buckeye Association of School Administrators. He was named the 2025 Northeast Region Outstanding Administrator by the Ohio School Boards Association.

Summit County retired teachers award scholarships, grants

The Summit County Retired Teachers Association has awarded $13,500 in student scholarships and teacher grants.

The nonprofit association awarded five scholarships worth $1,500 each to Summit County college students who are pursuing careers in education.

Scholarship recipients include Thomas Gaffney of Archbishop Hoban High School; Annabel Green of Hudson High School; Grace Lance of Springfield High School; Sydney Peterson of Catawba College who was a 2024 graduate of Green High School; and Jahzara Semper-Mitchell of Buchtel Community Learning Center.

The association also awarded $300 grants to 20 teachers in Summit County public school districts to help them enhance their academic and enrichment activities.

Teachers from Akron, Barberton, Coventry, Cuyahoga Falls, Green, Norton, Manchester, Revere, Springfield, Stow-Munroe Falls and Tallmadge school districts received this year’s grants.

Previous grants have helped teachers purchase classroom materials such as math manipulative sets, terrarium supplies, books, subscriptions for elementary classes, microscopes, robotic parts and brain and heart models for middle and high schools.

Funds for the scholarships and grants are raised by retired teachers through a variety of initiatives. More information on how to apply or donate for a future scholarship or grant can be found at summitcountyretiredteachers.org.

Tallmadge Middle School assistant principal honored by statewide association

A Tallmadge Middle School assistant principal has been named assistant principal of the year by the Ohio Association of Secondary School Administrators.

Kim Hussing, who was selected as a top administrator for Zone 6, will be honored by the statewide administrator agency’s fall conference in October. She also is among 10 regional award winners who are being considered for the organization’s overall state recognition.

Tallmadge City Schools credits Hussing with being instrumental in the success of the middle school’s positive behavioral interventions and supports program and for helping to create a positive and supportive environment for students and staff.

Ohio Digital Learning School enrolling younger students

The Ohio Digital Learning School is now enrolling students as young as 14.

The state virtual public school, which focuses on credit recovery, previously enrolled students between the ages of 16 and 21.

Executive Director Brian Powderly said in a news release that the change will allow the school to connect with students earlier in their school careers and provide them with additional support to help them stay focused on their path to graduation.

University of Akron appoints new dean for Buchtel College

The University of Akron has appointed Peter Q. Pfordresher to serve as dean of the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences.

Pfordresher recently served as associate dean for academic affairs at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York, in the College of Arts & Sciences, where he also previously held department chair and director of undergraduate studies roles. He will start his new role on July 31.

An internationally recognized expert in the field of music cognition, Pfordresher is a fellow of the Association for Psychological Science, past president of the Society for Music Perception and Cognition, and an author of the textbook “Psychology of Music: From Sound to Significance” (third edition).

Pfordresher, who has a doctorate from Ohio State University, will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of Buchtel College, increasing enrollment, improving student retention, graduation rates and other student outcomes, strengthening faculty relations, community relations and fundraising, expanding relationships with foreign and domestic universities and working with other University of Akron college deans to develop programs for students.
