Alex Freeman is already making a name for himself in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Freeman, the son of former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Antonio Freeman, scored for the United States in the first half of its match against Australia on Friday, June 19, in Seattle.
Freeman outjumped the Australian goalkeeper to head in the ball after teammate Sergiño Dest’s shot was blocked and deflected sent high in the air toward the goal.
The goal, late in the half, was at first negated by an offsides call. But, after a video review, it was allowed, giving the USMNT a 2-0 lead. The U.S. held on for the win by the same score to go 2-0 in group play and advance to the knockout round of 32.
Freeman has started as a defender for both U.S. matches in the World Cup. At just 21 years old, he’s the youngest of 26 players named to the team.
Freeman is in his 18th game with the U.S. men’s national team, all since 2025.
A Baltimore native who calls Florida home, he’s been playing club soccer for Villarreal CF in Spain. He played with Orlando City in the MLS from 2022 to 2026 and was named an MLS all-star in 2025 before joining Villarreal in January.
His father, Antonio, played eight seasons with the Packers, most notably from 1995 through 2001 when he made a Pro Bowl and played a massive role for both Super Bowl teams after the 1996 and 1997 seasons.
