Where to celebrate in the Binghamton area
In the Binghamton area, there are several ways to celebrate July 4, and the 250th anniversary.
Broome County and Visit Binghamton’s Path Through History Weekend coincides with the county’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary and explores local mansions and cemeteries, as well as sculptures — don’t miss Harriet Tubman on the Downtown Binghamton Freedom Trail — and the beloved carousels that make our area the celebrated Carousel Capital of the World.
The Newark Valley Historical Society is hosting the 10th Mountain Division Army Band from Fort Drum at the Lehigh Valley Ray Shaver Depot on June 27.
The Binghamton Rumble Ponies will celebrate on July 3-4 at Mirabito Stadium. A special “Bing Bang Boom” fireworks show, the largest of the Miller Auto Team Fireworks Series for the season, follows the game on July 3. The game begins at 7 p.m.
On July 4, the game starts at 4 p.m. The first 1,000 adult fans 13 and older at the game will receive a special America 1776 patriotic jersey.
Town of Union July 4 Extravaganza: The annual Fourth of July celebration returns to Highland Park for 2026. Find food vendors from 3-9 p.m., chicken barbecue beginning at noon, inflatables, face painting, a balloon artist and live music. Fireworks begin at 9:15 p.m. Tune in Magic 101.7fm and 102.5 The Vault for synchronized music.
Cancellation notice: Binghamton Philharmonic’s free America250 concert planned at Government Plaza has been canceled. A message on the philharmonic’s Facebook page references “safety limitations” with the plaza as a venue.
“While our team actively evaluated alternative locations, the tight timeline ahead of the holiday made it logistically impossible to secure and transition to a new venue in time,” the statement reads.
America 250 history in the Southern Tier
From Revolutionary War and Civil War veterans to famous architects and Binghamton’s first mayor, Broome County cemeteries reveal many of the stories that tie the are to important moments in history.
Phelps Mansion’s Sherman Phelps, Col. David Ireland and architect Isaac Perry are all on the list of those buried locally, and so are many others — including one Kentucky Derby winner.
Before Big Boy No. 4014 rolled through town in June, the Binghamton area has long claimed a strong railroad history. The Starrucca Viaduct, completed in 1848, would reach Broome County later that year. The Lackawanna Station was built in 1900 and was at the time one of three stations in the area. By 1930, many railroad lines converged in Binghamton.
There are many stories that shape our region’s contributions to the country’s past 250 years. Some we all know, but others, like history columnist’s Gerald Smith’s recent tribute to the Binghamton Civil War soldier who survived a ‘hole in the head,’ may be new to you.
As we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary July 4, take some time to explore the stories, landmarks and events that have shaped our region’s history. We’re here to guide you.
